According to the 1922 guide 'Cocktails and How to Mix Them', "This cocktail was first made...during a visit of Colonel Cornelius Vanderbilt, the American Millionaire, who was drowned on the Lusitania during the war." They got the millionaire wrong, but this drink is right on the money.
